Forest School

As part of our commitment to providing quality educational experiences, The Hermitage Schools are proud to offer pupils the chance to participate in Forest School sessions.

We aim for every child to be given the opportunity to attend our full Forest School programme of sessions during their time at both The Hermitage Infant and Junior Schools.

During Forest School, challenging outdoor experiences promote the development of the key skills of communication, problem solving and decision making, which have value across a range of occupations. They encourage a positive "opting in" and "can do" attitude. Children’s horizons are broadened, new challenges come to be relished and perseverance and determination are reinforced. Skills such as emotional growth, self-esteem, confidence and independence are nurtured and the woodland environment gives learners time and space to be by themselves, find peace and communicate with others. Risk is experienced by children in a managed way, teaching them about the importance of risk awareness and risk management – not risk avoidance.

Forest School is an opportunity for your child to experience nature and the outdoor environment in a safe, secure and hands-on way. Our ’forest’ is the environmental area on the school grounds, giving plenty of lower level cover (ideal for hide & seek). We are lucky to have such a diverse mixture of trees including Oak, Elm, Willow, Elder and Ash; some of which will be used during our sessions in many different ways. There are old wood piles to attract insects and small mammals, squirrels and birds.

The children are encouraged to investigate and explore but also to respect all living things. Children learn best from first hand experiences by exploring and playing together through a range of activities, leading to great learning opportunities. Forest School builds independence, high self-esteem and team building skills.

Health and safety considerations are always of paramount importance. The children will be using woodland tools. (A personal details & medical record form must be filled out before a child can attend and returned to the office).

The woodland we use is fairly dry but has a lot of sticks and some nettles and brambles underfoot. We supply the following clothing and equipment as it is essential. Rain will not cause a cancellation unless accompanied by wind. More thin layers are best for warmth and can always be removed if too warm.

Please let your child know that at forest school they CAN GET DIRTY AND YOU DO NOT MIND! Sun cream should also be applied if weather is sunny, along with a sun hat. All clothing must be clearly named.
